Jhakaas Beginning: Yudh 1985 Bollywood Film

Lets read the Jhakaas Beginning: Yudh 1985 Bollywood Film, that was released on 3rd May 1985 and has a distinct place among the movies of the 1980s Hindi cinema era. Not only was Yudh one among those films that were released during the year, but it was the directorial debut of a movie-maker who was set to make a name for himself as a highly stylized storyteller in the years to come – Rajiv Rai. Hailing from a family of filmmakers – being the son of Gulshan Rai, a film producer, and having been mentored by directors such as Yash Chopra, Rajiv Rai joined the filmmaking fraternity with privilege as well as pressure.

However, it (Yudh 1985 Bollywood film) was far from being an easy ride. Announced in December 1981, the movie was expected to feature an amazing cast consisting of Sanjay Dutt, Nutan, Tina Munim, Reena Roy, Raj Kiran, Danny Denzongpa, Amrish Puri, and Pran. Yet, as is the case with any other movie production, time has brought its share of alterations and adjustments which eventually led to a major reshuffle in the cast. Thus, one of the key members of the original cast, Sanjay Dutt, was replaced by Jackie Shroff, thereby adding a totally new element to the plot of the movie. Once premiered, Yudh became a multi-starrer movie starring Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor who took upon himself to play two roles in the film. Among the supporting cast one could find Nutan and Pran as well as Tina Munim along with cameo appearances by Hema Malini and Shatrughan Sinha.

Themes of identity, ethics, and confrontation form a major part of this film and have always been integral parts of the themes portrayed in Hindi cinema in the 1980s. These are highlighted through the dual performance of Anil Kapoor in the film who acts not only as a source of emotional stability for the story but also as a structural device in it. It is through Kapoor’s role as a contrastive personality on the screen, one playing a villain while the other being a virtuous hero, that he shows the audience his mastery in acting as a performer. It should be noted that the dual role played by Anil Kapoor in this film was a major step towards making him an iconic personality as an actor in Bollywood films.

On the other hand, Jackie Shroff gives a performance which is restrained in its intensity. While the roles played by Anil Kapoor were contrastive, Jackie Shroff’s performance remains subdued, thus complementing that of Anil Kapoor’s character well. The roles enacted by veteran actors Nutan and Pran also add value to this film due to their experience as actors. Even Tina Munim plays effectively to the extent of her scope to add warmth and balance to the movie.

One of the best things about Yudh is the villain named Gama Maatin played by Danny Denzongpa. The acting of Danny adds a lot of spice and class to the film as it helps in escalating the conflict in the movie. This character also portrays the overall trend set in Hindi films in the 1980s. Villains were not limited to mere shouting anymore as the 1980s produced villains who were sophisticated and calculating in their approach.

It should be noted that there is nothing exceptional about the plot of the it (Yudh 1985 Bollywood film) as it consists of very ordinary plots that can be seen anywhere else. Yet, what makes the plot special is the dialogues written by Naeem Sha. One particular word coined by Sha in his dialogue became immensely popular among viewers. The word “Jhakaas,” which became synonymous with Anil Kapoor, gained immense popularity as a word used frequently in day-to-day life.

The score composed by the famous team Kalyanji-Anandji is one of many examples of change that occurred during this time period in the sounds of Hindi films. Collaborating also with Viju Shah, who in the future years gained great fame as a movie composer in his own right, they managed to create a unique musical atmosphere that was neither completely classical nor fully modern. Although this soundtrack might not belong to the best albums of this period, it marks the start of a fruitful cooperation between Rajiv Rai and Viju Shah, whose future movies like Tridev, Mohra and Gupt enjoyed immense success due to their unique musical style.

As it is clear, the commercial value of the Yudh 1985 the Bollywood film, in question was rather low, and Yudh could hardly be ranked alongside other successful projects of the director. Yet, it remains to be remembered as an important milestone in Rai’s career, as a movie in which he was able to explore himself creatively, adapt and improve as a film-maker. In addition, this was a chance for Anil Kapoor to showcase his skills as a performer. More than anything, Yudh stands as a testament to the evolving nature of filmmaking. It is a reminder that not all important films are defined by immediate success; some derive their value from what they set in motion. The film embodies a moment of transition—between generations, between styles, and between phases of artistic development. Its narrative of identity and conflict mirrors, in many ways, its own journey as a film shaped by change.

In today’s perspective, with a historical view of things, Yudh is much more than a film that made its directorial debut; it was the beginning of a journey that would go on to achieve much higher success. The film features a director on the verge of making his mark, actors who were still developing their screen personas, and a changing industry. With all this in mind, Yudh is much more than just a film; it is also a part of the larger narrative of Hindi cinema.

Roman (Hindi / Urdu)

To dosto, film “Yudh” 3 May 1985 ko release hui thi aur 1980 ke dahe ke Hindi cinema mein is ka apna ek alag hi maqam hai. Yeh sirf us saal ki ek film nahi thi, balke yeh us director ki pehli film thi jis ne aage chal kar apne stylish andaaz ki wajah se naam kamaya – haan, baat ho rahi hai Rajiv Rai ki. Woh khud filmi khandan se aate thay (Gulshan Rai ke bete thay) aur Yash Chopra jese bare director se seekh li thi, to un par filmi dabao bhi tha aur start mein barhat bhi.

Lekin yeh film itni asaan nahi thi. December 1981 mein iska elaan hua to socha gaya tha ke is mein Sanjay Dutt, Nutan, Tina Munim, Reena Roy, Raj Kiran, Danny Denzongpa, Amrish Puri aur Pran honge. Lekin jaise ke har film mein hota hai, waqt ke saath tabdeeliyan aayi aur cast mein bhaari ulat pher ho gaya. Sab se bara tabdeeli yeh hui ke Sanjay Dutt ki jagah Jackie Shroff ko le liya gaya, jis se film ki kahani mein hi naya twist aa gaya. Jab film release hui to yeh ek bari multi-starrer film thi jis mein Jackie Shroff aur Anil Kapoor thay, aur Anil Kapoor ne dohra kirdar ada kiya tha. Support mein Nutan, Pran, Tina Munim thay aur Hema Malini aur Shatrughan Sinha ne khusoosi kirdar (cameo) kiya tha.

Is film mein pehchan, imandari aur takrao ke themes ubhar kar aate hain, jo 80s ke Hindi films ka jana pehchana hissa thay. Yeh sab Anil Kapoor ki dohri adakari ke zariye dikhaya gaya hai. Anil Kapoor ne ek taraf villain ka role kiya to doosri taraf nek hero ka, aur isi ke zariye unhon ne sab ko dikha diya ke asli performer kise kehte hain. Yeh kehna ghalat nahi hoga ke isi dohre role ne Anil Kapoor ko baad mein ek icon banne ka rasta dikhaya.

Un ke kirdar ne 80s ke Hindi cinema ka woh trend bhi dikhaya jahan villains sirf chillaane wale nahi reh gaye thay, balke sophisticated aur chalaak, siyaana villains aaye thay.

Ab ek baat aur – mana ke film ki kahani mein koi bohat naya pattern nahi tha, aisi kahaniyan pehle bhi dekhi thi. Lekin is kahani ko nayi jaan di Naeem Sha ke dialogues ne. Unhon ne ek aisa lafz ghara jo filmi duniya mein itna viral ho gaya ke log ghar ghar bolne lage. Haan, woh lafz hai “Jhakaas!” jo sab se pehle Anil Kapoor ke parde par chhuta aur phir logon ki rozmarra ki zubaan ka hissa ban gaya.

Film ka score aur gaane mashhoor jori Kalyanji – Anandji ne diye, aur yeh us daur ki badalti hui music duniya ki misaal hain. Un ke saath Viju Shah bhi thay, jo baad mein bohat bare music composer bane (unhon ne hi Mohra, Gupt jesi films mein tadka lagaya). Is film ka music na poori tarah purana tha, na poora naya – balke kuch aisa beech ka jo Rajiv Rai aur Viju Shah ke liye shuruaat sabit hua. Baad mein unhi dono ki milansari se “Tridev”, “Mohra” aur “Gupt” jesi films ko dhamakedar music mila.

Haan, yeh maan’ne mein koi harj nahi ke commercial tor par yeh film utni dhamakedar nahi thi, aur na hi yeh Rajiv Rai ki superhit films ke barabar thi. Lekin is ke bawajood, “Yudh” un ke career ka ek bohat aham mor tha. Isi film mein woh khud ko ek director ke taur par explore (talash) kar paye, seekhe aur sudhre. Saath hi, yeh Anil Kapoor ke liye bhi apni adakari dikhane ka ek acha platform tha.

Sab se bari baat – “Yudh” yeh yaad dilati hai ke har aham film box office hit ho kar nahi banti. Kuch films apni asal qeemat is se leti hain ke un ke aane se aage chal kar kya hua. Yeh film tabdeeli ki us ghari ki kahani hai – jab purani nasal se nayi nasal ka safar ho raha tha, jab style aur content dono badal rahe thay.

To aaj jab hum peeche mur kar dekhte hain, to “Yudh” sirf pehli film nahi hai – yeh us safar ki shuruaat hai, jis ne baad mein bulandiyan chhui. Is mein woh director hain jo apni pehchan banane wala tha, woh actor hain jo abhi poori tarah apni jagah pakki kar hi rahe thay, aur ek badalta hua cinema. Isi wajah se “Yudh” sirf ek film nahi – yeh Hindi cinema ke us bare safar ka ek dilchasp pao hai.

Jhakaas film thi yeh apne tareeqe se, bas tab logon ne poora nahi samjha!
